You may be thinking that, based on the title of this post, I didn't like the teaser trailer to Star Wars Episode 7 that launched this week. But surprise; that's not the reason why.
There have been six total "episodes" of the movie series. The first episode in the series, which began almost 40 years ago, was considered to be the most advanced in movie tech at the time. With a series so in tune with advancements in technology, you'd think it would take them less than 4 years to release the series on Blu Ray (early 2008 HD-DVD died and late 2011 the Blu Rays were released).
But none of that really matters, because of this simple fact: you cannot rent any of the Star Wars movies.
That's right. Look it up. Try to legally rent any of the Star Wars movies. I was planning to watch episode 7 next year, but if I can't catch up on the 12 or so hours of existing story... I'm going to pass on this episode. I don't agree with (and accept) the fact that purchase is my only choice.
One of the great things about Marvel is that before the Avengers came out, I was capable of catching up on the entire story/universe by renting all the movies related to it. Without that option for Star Wars... It's pretty much dead before it even started.
There's still a year before the movie comes out, so maybe Disney will have a change of heart. Maybe there's hope...
